Copilot Memory intelligently remembers key details from your previous Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat conversations, including your preferences. You can also customize how Microsoft 365 Copilot responds to your prompts based on your preferences in Chat settings.
Customize how Copilot responds to you
To add custom instructions for how Copilot responds to your prompts, complete the following steps:
- Go to Copilot Chat and sign in with your Microsoft 365 account.
- At the top right of the Copilot app, select ... Settings and more and then select
Chat settings. - In the Chat settings window, select
Personalization from the left-side menu. - Find the Custom instructions tile.
- You can turn off custom instructions by moving the Custom instructions toggle to the Off position.
- Select Edit instructions to give instructions to Copilot.
- Choose from the suggested instructions, or in the compose box, add details you want Copilot to know about you and specify how you would like it to format its responses. For example,

In future Copilot conversations, Copilot remembers your preferences and uses it to tailor its responses to your needs.
